I was in Milan, in the car, in the back, my head resting against the window while my parents drove. I looked outside at the Po Valley running flat past, the warehouses, the rows of identical trees, and inside I was rather switched off. I came from many changes of home and school, first Paris, then Italy, the two languages tangled in my head and nothing came out. In Milan I'd done a bit of Italian school and a bit of French school, but I was closed off, didn't talk to anyone, and the psychoanalyst had suggested a boarding school where I could make friends. In reality I was mostly thinking about my Amiga500 and video games — the only thing that kept me hooked to anything.
